Small Servings of Whimsy and Wisdom to Calm the Mind and Nourish the Heart

“Grief is love let free.”

— from 100 Words

Grief changes what you can take in. Often, a full-size book is too much. A conversation can be too much. Some days, a single question is too much.

This book was written for those days.

“I love this book! It was given to me recently to help with a difficult time of my life. I have been unable to concentrate long enough to read anything in recent months, so this was a perfect gift.”

If you are grieving

I wrote 100 Words the year after my late husband passed. Each piece is one hundred words long, with a photograph beside it. Some poems are about loss. Others are about morning glories, wood thrush songs, little black sandals, or the sweetness of ordinary life continuing. Grief holds room for all of it.

There are no chapters to keep track of, no big ideas to follow, nothing complicated to absorb. Open anywhere. Read one page. Set it down. That was enough, and so are you.

“How are you doing?” was my least favorite question when I was grieving. Newly widowed, I couldn’t face a loving crowd, a phone call, or sometimes even a kind question. What I could do was be alone and take in a few true words at a time. This book offers exactly that. These pages keep you company at whatever hour grief wakes you, and they don’t mind tears.

“Beautifully illustrated, with short, easily accessible poems. One woman’s response to the lessons that grief taught her, reminding us to appreciate small moments in life. This book is like a good friend when we need an arm around our shoulders. Calming, comforting, tender, and touching.”

If someone you love is grieving

It’s hard to know what to say or how to comfort them. Words feel too big or too small, so we send flowers or a meal and hope it helps their heart somehow.

There is something else you can do. Tell me who to send this book to, and I’ll sign it and put it in the mail with a handwritten note tucked inside. Your words or mine, whichever you prefer. It arrives in their mailbox and lets them know they are loved.

“I was originally loaned this book by a friend, and I loved it so much that I bought two more copies of it to give to others. A wonderful book to keep in a handy place, to pick up and read when you feel in need of words that will comfort or inspire you.”

“I read it straight through. I couldn’t seem to stop, wanting to hear what came next. I was able to follow Terri’s journey through dealing with a terrific loss and the insights that came with each day. Read it fast or slow, but read it to the end, where you find the sweetest words.”

“If I could give it six stars, I would without hesitation.”
